FreeNAS version 11.2U3

Setup: Two FreeNAS machines to act as a share under Windows Server 2016. They are both connected to the AD.

FreeNAS1 should act the primary machine and replicate its pool to FreeNAS2.
If FreeNAS1 would go down, FreeNAS2 should take over by using a short-lived DNS entry.
Say FreeNAS2 would be active for a while and start getting new files, the goal here is to
find a solution how to replicate data back to FreeNAS1 when it comes back online.

I have tried to set FreeNAS2 to replicate back to the same pool in FreeNAS1, but failed.

Any thoughts?

Replication is not the tool for that.

You can get the result you want (to some degree with caveats) with rsync.

You would need to accept some level of automatic conflict resolution (assuming the data is changing on both sides).

You would need to have a file structure that remains consistent even with open files (databases would not work with this very well), even if you rsync from a snapshot.

Perhaps what you're describing is really the HA function of TrueNAS (not available in the free product)... depends how badly you want it $$.
