Hello, I am definitely a FreeNAS newbie, and new to servers in general, but I am fairly proficient in the operation of computers in general.

I've been thinking about building a FreeNAS box for a while out of an old Dell computer I have, but have not done so yet. I recently acquired an Intel Core Duo MacBook, and that got me thinking. Would it be possible to install my old hard drives in the Dell running FreeNAS, and use the MacBook as a sort of controller that serves the files? Perhaps there is a way to let FreeNAS manage the data and redundancies and such, and then the MacBook would just see it is a large external hard disk?

I'm not sure of the intricacies of such a setup, so I apologize for the lack of information. I am a Mac user, so I'm interested in the close integration of Apple's server applications and the other Macs in my household, but also in the usability and stability of FreeNAS. Is there some way to combine the two in a usable fashion?

I didn't quite understand but take a look at iSCSI, that might be what you're looking for...

You cannot mount shares of another servers in freenas though..
