Freenas Server Placement Issue

I've found the perfect place to relocate my Freenas server but the one bad thing is that it's on top of my subwoofer, would isolation pads between the server and subwoofer help any?

Hey Swingarm,

Really, I would not put it there. The vibration will be very hard on the hard drives. There will be no padding that will keep your hard drives safe from the kind of vibration a subwoofer will do. In fact, that vibration can be bad enough to mess up with the cards inserted in PCI slots or cables connected to the board / drives.

Not a good idea at all.

Do a little math here...

Soundwaves are in length of millimeters. HD precision is in length of micrometer. So even a pad that would absorb 99% of the vibration would let pass 10 times more than what is needed to affect a hard drive.

There are no pads that can absorb all the vibration produced by a subwoofer, even less to the point of not letting through as low as micrometers that can damage a hard drive.

So No, that is clearly not a good idea.

Or it is a good one to damage your hard drives and loose your data...

I wouldn't be comfortable even with having my NAS in the same room with a subwoofer,
not sure if it would be harmful, but I couldn't enjoy the subwoofer

Well I'm going to move it. I have no choice for it to be in the same room as the subwoofer because it's the only room with ethernet cables(older house).

Just don't do it...There's no way to fully isolate the hard drives from the vibrations induced by the subwoofer..either physically..OR audibly..as in through the air induced. Google screaming at hard drives to see how many errors a guy was able to induce just by shouting as a disk shelf with physical isolation built into the case...get the machine as far away from the sub....as you can.

I would not put any computer within several feet of a subwoofer. Period.

You might have other options:
1) If your house is wired for cable TV, you can try using MOCA to connect it to your network.
2) If your NAS is primarily used for serving media and you don't need maximum network performance, then you can consider setting up a WiFi bridge and connect your NAS that way. FreeNAS itself does not support connection via WiFi, but a bridge will be OK as long as you have reliable wireless.

You will need to learn a few things about networking in order to set up either solution, but they are both viable options.
