Everything is up and running on the bench, GUI on my server is setup but I can't get FreeNAS to list and/or see all of the drives hooked to the motherboard. Four of the six 1tb drives are all that are listed and the ssd doesn't come up on the list of available drives. Two drives are new out of the box and have not been formatted in any way. The ssd is from a previous system. Do the drives need to be formatted before use in a NAS setup? Also didn't want to setup any volumes until I know for sure that the missing drives can be included.

They do not need formatting to be used with FreeNAS. I'd check to make sure AHCI is enabled, check your cabling, and test the drives on another computer. Most of the time if a drive isn't working right its bad or the controller isn't supported by FreeBSD/FreeNAS. The fact that some drives are detected kind of discounts the driver possibility.

You could try zeroing out the hard drives with some kind of tool for whatever OS you normally use. Some people that have used drives in RAID arrays have had weird problems with the RAID proprietary data confusing FreeNAS and causing odd results.

You could also try opening a shell from the GUI and doing a "camcontrol devlist" to see if your drives are being detected.

Three of the drives are from a previous raid1 on the motherboard that failed. That is why I began to research the FreeNAS option. Will swap with new drives and see what results I get.
Also have read that I should set bios to AHCI for drives. Is that only for hot swapping and is IDE OK for normal setup?
Thanks
