I'm thinking about using my Firefly-RK3288 as a NAS server.

I know that at the present moment i can boot into Ubuntu Server (?) and use it for my cause (?). Downside is a lot of customization is needed. And its not a straightforward solution (?).

So. Is there a way to port FreeNAS into Firefly-RK3288?. As far as i know FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD (With available ARM ports). Only difficulty remains is the lack of drivers.

If it is impossible at all to port FreeNAS, or at least please provide a viable solution to convert Ubuntu to NAS.

With only 2GB of RAM, it would be very difficult to port FreeNAS to such a device, plus you'd be fighting the whole new platform problem, different paradigms, and maybe I'm just not seeing it, but an apparent lack of SATA ports.

By comparison, setting up the usual suspects on a Ubuntu install shouldn't be very difficult. For CIFS, that's Samba, for NFS it's probably just setting up existing system services, and for AFP that'd be Netatalk.

Nope

I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu-land. All that stuff changes too quickly. You can probably find a way to install debian wheezy, then install openmediavault. http://wiki.openmediavault.org/index.php?title=1.0/Installation_Apt-Get

Alternatively, you can just install requisite packages in ubuntu server and configure them.

Thanks a lot for the answers!

As i an owner of both T-Firefly RK3288 & Rock2 Square (http://radxa.com/Rock2).
The HDD problem is noted indeed on the T-Firefly RK3288, but Rock2 Square has SATA port. But then again minimum requirements is a problem.

Anyway thanks again! Will try to install openmediavault. See how it goes.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news. Overall, the ARM thing is intriguing, and I suspect that in the next few years, we will see ARM platforms that are beefy enough to run FreeNAS, and at that point, it seems likely that someone will try to port it.

Check in at the zfsonlinux community. There are ubuntu zfs packages you can add. You will have to do nas from the command line or you can add napp-it as a gui.

NFS - you'd think so, but no, you have to install packages for that. Strange, but true.
