Am I missing something here? I can install/upgrade a FreeNAS jail to 11.4, but FreeNAS is on 11.3?

It's not the kernel, it's the environment. The file system the jail is based on, or cloned from.

Also: "It is recommended to keep the iocage host and jails RELEASE synchronized."

Recommended. Not, strictly, required. My 11.3 jails were running happily on a 12.1 kernel. That said, I did upgrade them to 12.1 once I determined that I'm probably not going back to 11.3 for anything but short-lived testing.

Hello again... LOL

Yeah, I read that. I was just always under the impression that you couldn't install a jail with a newer version of FreeBSD than the BSD version running on FreeNAS. My FreeNAS shell says it's on 11.3-RELEASE-p9, but I upgraded some jails all the way up to 11.4-RELEASE-p1. I know there was some talk about moving past the restriction, but I hadn't realized they got there yet.

Somewhere late in the 11.2 releases, they allowed jail creation with 11.3-RELEASE. I hadn't seen 11.4 out, but no real surprise that that works too.
