I set up my FreenNAS system and everything was good. I came back a few days later and the files on Network folder (Windows 10) is nowhere to be found. I did not change anything, and it was there before! I have played for hours and can not make the network visible.

Now I also installed Plex and added videos on the day I created it and it finds Plex on the network so I know it is working.

Settings:

STORAGE
Storage Permissions:
  • Apply Owner (User) - Checked
  • Owner (User) - Root
  • Apply Owner (group) - Checked
  • Owner (group) - Family
  • Apply Mode - Checked
  • Mode
    • Owner - Read | Write | Execute
    • Group - Read | Write | Execute
    • Other - Read | Execute
  • Permission Type: Unix
  • Set permission recursively - Not Checked
SHARING
Windows SMB I created:
  • Path: /mnt/ExternalHD (Hard drive path I mounted, it was working so I know it is mounted correctly.
  • Use as home server - Not checked
  • Apply Default Permissions - Not checked
  • Allow Guest Access - Checked
Again, it was working the day I set it up, and it no longer is anymore, not sure what happened when nothing changed!

Welcome to NetBIOS. With Windows 10 it works 60% of the time, every time.

Seriously though, just map the drive or use the IP address. It's not the end of the world.

Also, plex working means nothing in regards to your CIFS share.

How am I suppose to map a drive, when it is not even showing? I can go to the IP, but that is just the NAS dashboard, I need to be able to manage the folders and add data from all my computers.

Also the Plex working, just meant the machine itself is on and working.

Instead of "Browse for a folder", you type \\ipoffreenas\

And poof, all your shares will show up in the drop down...or, if you know the name of the share, you can just put that in.

That's the big mystery of NetBIOS. Discovery sucks big-time, but name resolution actually works consistently.
