Hi,

I have a new install of FreeNAS. The problem I'm facing is that I'm unable to get the system to access the outside network. Namely, the "Send Test Email" is not working. I receive the following error:

Your test email could not be sent: timed out

Here are the details of the install:
FreeNAS: 9.2.1.7-Release-x64
System: Lenovo TS140
Processor: Intel i3-4130 3.4GHz w/ ECC support
RAM: 2x4GB ECC
HDD: 4x 3TB WD RED
RAID: RAIDZ2

I have setup the configuration to work with google. I put in the Default Gatway as my router IP (192.168.1.1).

I have attached my configuration as images. Please see below:

Any idea what it could be? I'm been banging my head against the wall with this. I have no idea what the issue could be. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you

Yes, the email address has been set for Root.

In the command line, I'm able to ping the provider (i.e. gmail.com at 8.8.4.4).

8.8.4.4 is NOT an email server. That's a DNS server and nothing else....

8.8.4.4 is also not gmail server. I have no idea why you think it is...

# nslookup 8.8.4.4

Non-authoritative answer:
4.4.8.8.in-addr.arpa name = google-public-dns-b.google.com.

So yeah, you aren't going to be able to send email to a DNS server. ;)

Please try.

Outgoing mail server: 173.194.67.109
Password: ++++++ you need Application-specific password. Not the normal password you used in log-in.

He only needs that if he's setup the 2 factor authentication. If so he should be aware of how to access the gmail. But, the fact he's trying to go to a DNS server for email is definitely a problem. :P

I believe you need to use smtp.gmail.com. you only need to use IP addresses for DNS servers.

I'm not sure, but I think your email provider provides ways of searching for details of how to configure your email. :)

Thank you so much. It worked!

I updated the outgoing server to "smtp.gmail.com"

I left the Nameserver 1 and 2 as is. Those seem to be required in order for email to work.
