Has anyone build a FreeNAS setup in a VM with physical discs?
It should be possible, but I haven't tried yet, as I would have to take my computers apart.
Background info:
I have three systems. A silent desktop PC, my FreeNAS box with 4x2TB as RAIDZ1 and a HTPC. Most of the time two of those machines are running. Desktop + NAS or HTPC+NAS.
My idea is to move the NAS into one of the other systems to save energy and have less noise in the room.
Setting up FreeNAS inside a VM is easy. With Virtualbox you have the feature of accessing physical discs via RAW devices.
So in theory all what needs to be done is generate the RAW devices and add them to the FreeNAS VM.
Has anybody done this before?
Any problems or thoughts I missed?
