hello,
I have to fastly start any distro and I choosed FreeNAS. It is very usefull and really great but I have few very simple needs now:

1. I have simple atom-based mobo with only 2gb of RAM ( Ive ordered next 2gb stick but I would like to concentrate on that what I have now, I need simple, stable, stable, and really stable archive :))
2. I dont need as many functionalities, at this time I need only stability and file transfer at 50 MB maximum in peak for multiple sessions.

Assuming, I need only very simple storage platform without snapshotiing, backups (yes, without, and i know what i do :) compressions, deduplications etc. I would like to have possibility to set shares - cifs, nfs and that is what I need.

I have heard about RAM-killing arccache. I would like to disable it, but I cant find any documntation how to do that in Latest 9.3.1 STABLE

How can I do that? That is very urgent and temporary solution which only should host multiple disks arrays where:

other net hosts sending archive files.
And other net hosts gets that archive files and transfer it out. Archive files are always 700MB in size.

thank you for any help what to do to gets as many as possible stability and performance.

As I told, I dont need many, I have network limitations also :)

Thanks in advance for any help

FreeNAS is not for you.

FreeNAS is based on ZFS, and you cannot just disable things like ARC. It has a minimum memory requirement of 8GB. Going below that point can result in severe instability and data loss.

There are other NAS platforms, such as OpenFiler, which may be more suitable to your hardware availability.

FreeNAS with less than 8 GB is less than stable, forget the #1 if you don't add more RAM. The #2 doesn't matter because of the #1.
