Do you mean they show up in under Storage/Volumes/<pool>/dataset in the GUI or is there actually a CIFS share? i.e. \\server\share ? Showing under Storage is normal. I'm on FreeNAS-9.2.1.4-BETA-8ca472a-x64 and I don't have them listed on my CIFS shares. What version are you running?

Do you have the option on the CIFS share to "Show hidden files" enabled? Its not the same as in something like Windows Explorer show hidden files option. If enabled, the option will show directories that begin with a "."

Its on the CIFS share settings itself, not the CIFS service settings.

Does this happen for all CIFS shares? Maybe you shared out the top folder in the pool and not a dataset below it?

You might have to cycle CIFS off, then on. But folders starting with a period won't show up unless you've overridden the setting. And there's several ways(not the least of which is the CIFS share settings).

If you still have problems after following our advice, post your /etc/local/smb4.conf file and that will let us see all the setting you have applied and might help determine the issue.

post your smb4.conf file or the contents of it in a post...like I said above. That should shed some light on what might be happening.

This was the question I asked you in post #8! ;-) But to answer your question...you can create a CIFS share wherever you want. I'll say that typically you wouldn't share out the root of your pool, but as you found out, you certainly can. Just depends on your structure and what data your trying to access.
