Freenas 11.2-U8 to latest stable release

I have a fresh install of 11.2-U8 as of last week. I've backed up all my data off my freenas box. I want to update the server to latest 12.0 stable release. I'd prefer to keep my volume and a few dataset's but wipe out the rest and start fresh.

Questions:

• What's the most recommended upgrade path?
  • Install manual update file?
    • Is it not recommended to jump from 11.2 >12?
  • Use GUI to update to 11.3 > 12?
• If I do a fresh install of latest release on the same USB drive, will that perform an upgrade, same as manual file install in GUI?
• Will I be able to import my volume and few datasets I decide to keep, so long as I have a config backup?

I'm sure I'll come up with more questions, but we'll start there. Thanks in advance.
