We do not support questions revolving around virtualizing FreeNAS... at all. So that may be why they disappeared. The reason we don't is because it has been shown to be so completely irresponsible that we don't even want to give the impression it remotely makes sense to do it.

We have a sticky on how you can attempt to virtualize(which is locked for obvious reasons) if you want to go that route and incur all risks yourself. But expect zero help from this forum if you decide to go that route.

Thanks for replying cyberjock, I am planning on running a VM with a M1115 passed through to it and not in production....nothing important will be on there (for starters). I am going to be running server hardware Xeon, ECC RAM etc...

I have read a bunch of forums around running in a VM and I will be experimenting initially....using VM's makes this much easier....will move to dedicated HW later.

Back to my original question that got deleted....the M1115 can only run 8 disks, all of the stuff I have read around optimum configurations says 2, 4 or 8 disks + raid level #of disks (1, 2 or 3), this never adds up to 8 in a single pool. To keep things "tidy" I only want to run off the M1115 and leave the mobo ports alone. What is the recommended raid config here? 6+2?

No, we're not here to answer questions that involve anything around VMs. PERIOD. I don't care if it's just to learn. We provide zero support for VMs without exception. It's just not worth the effort and time. Considerable resources have been spent in years gone by because of virtualizing and our very small group of volunteers cannot handle the workload.

As for the number of disks, that's been answered here plenty, including my own presentation. There aren't "good" combinations for all disk integers, so you have to be flexible or just accept that you are using a non-standard configuation. In your case, if you want 8 disks you either do RAIDZ2 with 8 disks or something like 2 vdevs of 4 disks in RAIDZ2.

Since you had asked, you are open to suggestions...

Let me repeat, that I am really suggesting deploying only 6 drives in RAID-Z2 at the start, but using hard drives that are 4TB each. Use your motherboard ports and two from the card.

Budget to deploy 6 more drives in another RAID-Z2 and using disks with a capacity of 5TB or 6TB on the remaining SATA ports of your card, when your storage fills up.
