FN v11 - All sort of errors after joining the AD

This is a complimentary post about a migration issue I'm having from v8.3.1 to 11. I'm starting a new thread specifically for this issue as it has nothing with the migration itself, but it's part of it.

OK, after giving up with the backup / restore approach, I will try to configure the smb.conf (where most of my issues sits) manually with the information of the older server. If this works will save me a lot of time and the rest of the server can be configured without any hassle. After anything else I started from scratch, fresh FreeNAS v11 install. Looks great until I join the Active Directory. After that, I have all sort of errors on the console.

These errors only occurs after joining the AD. It's a fresh install, the AD (functional level 47 W2008R2) is working perfectly well, and the ZFS volume from the previous version wasn't imported yet. This test machine only has the boot device, is fresh installed from the ISO.

I noticed that even before starting anything related with the Windows network I noticed some error being logged during the boot about some error on the smb4.conf file and asking to debug the problem with testparm.

What is going on?

This is a virtual test environment and I'm not dealing with my production server that I'm not willing to mess without having everything sorted out first.

you can not manually edit that file. it will get overwritten at boot and in upgrades. Everything you do must happen in the GUI.

I have never used AD so I can't help much more than that. +1 to you for using a vm first before doing it in production.

I thought someone would say this but I had some hope FreeNas could read each configuration from the corresponding OS file... Bad news...
Anyway, I had to sort out all the other errors before moving forward. I never thought installing FreeNas would be such a hassle. What bugs me most is that I'm not doing anything off the script. Fresh install and AD joining... basic stuff.

You should try freenas 9.10.2-U5, it might be more stable. Freenas 11 is still really new.

Ouch! I don't want to load a production server with a one week old release! I just saw the release date after reading your post. I thought this was a more mature product... Downloading v9.10 now!!

Well freenas 11 is probably going to be a better choice if you can. It all depends on your requirements. Like why are you updating in the first place? Freenas 9.10.2 is freebsd 10 and freenas 11 is freebsd 11. So really getting freebsd 11 base OS would probably be really nice to have if you can get it to work.

Agree entirely. Having FreeBSD 11 would be very good, but this is not a home server. This is a production server on my business. I'm moving the disks to a new and faster hardware. In this process I'll update to a newer release . I'm running v8.3.1 on my legacy server.
