First time install questions

I am setting this up inside a VM in proxmox. I tried it once with my sas card passed over to it which added a lot of drives and it just sits at booting from hard drive for over half an hour before I killed it. Should I install before adding my sas card or is there any reason it just hung at the booting from hard drive line?

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Please take a few moments to review the Forum Rules, conveniently linked at the top of every page in red, and pay particular attention to the section on how to formulate a useful problem report, especially including a detailed description of your hardware.

Please note that PCIe passthru on Proxmox is listed as experimental, and that Proxmox users are somewhat less successful than ESXi users at virtualizing TrueNAS. Usually a hang on HBA scan is an indication that passthru is set up incorrectly (or perhaps you're using a non-Supermicro board where it is less likely to work).
