Hi
Like most that came before me, I'm currently using a Qnap 469L as me Media server. Directly play works fine however I need something that will transcode my 1080 files.
I'l looking to setup Freenas to run as primarily a Media sever with the following plugins

Plex Sever
Transmission
sabnzb
couchpotota
Sonarr

I have these left over parts that I would like to use, would this be ok for a media server?

CPU: i7 4970k
Ram: 16 GB DDR 3
MB: Asus z97I
Case: Node 304 Case
HDD: 4 * 3TB Reds

Thanks in advance

Plex recommends ~2000 passmarks for each 1080p stream and I believe your i7 CPU is rated for >10,000 - so it ought to work. You won't have ECC memory, which is recommended - but not required.

Good luck with your new build!

Well ECC is highly recommended. For good reasons.
Before deciding to do the build without the recommended hardware you should do some reading on the risks to at least make an informed decision to put your data at that risk.

Here is one link:

When you decide that you care for your data and want to build a proper FreeNAS box, you should look at the hardware recommendations document.
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/

Then prior to installing and buying all components you should read cyberjocks newbie guide to assist you in configuration problems.

The general consensus on the forum is: don't do FreeNAS wrong. Do it right, or don't do it with "production" data. As test box - sure. As a solid solution to be trusted as a proper server with all the benefits you EXPECT from FreeNAS - NOPE!
