Hello everyone, new to posting but lurking for the past little while.

Always wanted to get down to building a FreeNAS server, just never got the time nor resources to do so.

Currently, this is the part list I've come up with regarding my build:

Processor - Intel Core i3 6100T (https://goo.gl/N5vYKX)
Motherboard - SuperMicro MBD-X11SSL-F-O (https://goo.gl/8FyHkS)
Case - Fractal Design Node 804 (https://goo.gl/pQBKbm)
Hard Drive - Western Digital RED 5400RPM 3TB X 6 (https://goo.gl/mYYnFW)
RAM - Kingston KVR21E15D8/16 (https://goo.gl/8AURx9)
PSU - Seasonic SSR-550PX (https://goo.gl/GDMXm1)

I would use a USB drive as my primary boot drive.

How does this look so far? Is there anything I can do to find ECC ram for cheaper? All the other prices are negligible, I have other links to use I used newegg/amazon as per the recommended sites for links. I already have the drives and the case running an HTPC build, so I'd be moving those over.

Thanks in advance!

Everything seems ok to me.

DDR4 is still fairly new and not a lot of decommissioned servers yet so the chances for cheaper ram just are not out there. You can wait for some sales and see what happens the closer it gets to Christmas.

Even though you already have the drives in use I would still give them a couple passes burn in if they had not been done that way before using them. And hopefully you already know that the data will not be safe if you do a burn in and guessing that they already have an ntfs format you can't just import and go with it except for read only so you will need to backup and then build a pool.

Currently there is a industry shortage and supply and demand conditions have greatly increased prices
due to low stock levels world-wide.
You might try and look for Samsung M391A2K43BB1-CPB modules or try

You might want to go with the X11SSM-F-O since it's better than the SSL. For details look at the Supermicro X11 thread and specifically Ericloewe's posts on why SSM is better than SSL

Your PSU is maybe a bit overdone. Though I am always in favor of a good one. And wy the USB boot device? A cheap (small) SSD wil not break the bank and would actualy be a very small part of your proposed budget.

It seems right, it's roughly equivalent to the old G-Series, but with better performance (close to X-Series, even - too bad about the crap fans they're using now).

I was looking at the price (following the link of the OP). I should have seen that it was priced in CND$ and not in US$. That makes a big difference. Still expensive but not over the top.
