Hi everybody,
I must first build my own NAS
The goal of my FreeNAS is to share media plex, storing photos and store HD footage from my camera to my house.

I originally looked at using sequence hardware:

Supermicro A1SRI-2758F-O motherboard http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SRi-2758F.cfm
processor Intel Atom C2758 (8 cores)
2 x 8 GB Transcend DDR3-1600 SC - 8GB DDR3, 8GB SO DIMM 204-pin, 1600 MHz / PC3-12800, CL11, 1.5 V, unbuffered, ECC
5 x 6 TB WD Red Pro NAS HDD - 6TB

Someone running a similar structure which have had good success / or vice versa?

Sincerely
Ole

You don't need the "Pro" version of the Reds. Your bottleneck will be your network, which the regular Reds can easily saturate. Save your money.

The C2758 is a poor choice for a file server. You probably want a C2750.

That's dubious and not validated by Supermicro. I highly recommend you get something from the QVL. Note that it seems that Micron now has DDR3 16GB UDIMMs, which might be interesting for you.

I'm curious what difference between them suits the 2750 better for file serving. I guess maybe I didn't really research the two well enough before getting the A1SRI2758.

But in answer to the original question, that board with reds is working well for me. I use it to serve media files to a Kodi system, take time machine backups, and run transmission in a jail. I also do some file transcoding on the server. I'm not serving to multiple clients simultaneously, though, so probably not putting a lot of demand on the system.

C2750 does Turbo Boost. C2758 does QuickAssist, which helps with some network tasks.

That's about it, but since prices are roughly the same, it doesn't make much sense to get the "wrong" one.
