Okay, folks, I hold everything that I (hope) need and will build it over the weekend. I'm pretty confident, but any thoughts/opinions, as always, would be appreciated. I've included links to where I bought the item and the prices that I actually paid for each item. I paid shipping and/or sales tax for a few things, but these costs were probably under $30.
Mobo: Supermicro X9SCM-F-O - $146.42 (10% discount coupon, normally $162.69)
USB: 2x Kingston Digital 8GB DataTraveler Micro - $7.99
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA-380D - $44.99
RAM: 2x Crucial 8GB Unbuffered ECC CT102472BA160B (first stick was $97.93, second $87.95)
Case: Fractal Design R4 Black Pearl - $79.99 (on sale, normally $109.99)
CPU: Xeon E3-1230 V2 - $229.99
HDDs: 4x WD Red 3TB - 2x @ $99.99 (139.99 each w/ $60 rebate and $20 rebate (TigerDirect) and 2x @ $139.99 (Newegg)
Note on HDDs: TigerDirect runs the $30 rebates from time to time it looks like. However, you are limited to 2 drives per order and, more importantly, 2 rebates per household (I wasn't sure I would get away with going for 4 and was eager to just get everything in my hands). They had an additional $20 rebate if you spent $100 (yes, you could use both at the same time), so final cost for two of the drives will be ~$100 each after rebates. Amazon has the drives normally at ~$135, but I pay sales tax (bastards) so it's cheaper with Newegg as long as shipping is free.

Though I never started this project as a completely new build, that's where I ended up after lurking these forums, reading of stickies and much study (thanks to everyone for their help, especially cyberjock, jgreco and DrKK). The CPU is overkill for what I need at this point (and may always be) but I couldn't convince myself that the Pentium or i3 alternatives that I considered and that supported ECC would have been sufficient for potential need. Also, I was going to build with 8GB of RAM, and think I could have safely done this and run my 4-disk RAIDZ2 pool, but saw the price drop the second time around and pulled the trigger (still at the price point as of checking it tonight).
Grand total: $1183.21

Thanks for looking,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I don't see anything at all wrongs with your parts list. There are tons of FreeNAS users who are using the X9S\E3 platform with great success.

That said, if I were going to build a filer today I would look real hard at the Supermicro X10 platform which is the Haswell\socket 1150 version of the X9S & pair it with an i3 processor. The Haswell i3's are listed on the Intel ARK page as supporting ECC which clears up the never conclusively answered question of ECC support for the Sandy & Ivy Bridge chips on the C2XX platform.

There are a couple of long X10-related posts in the forums if you want to investigate going with the latest & greatest platform, but I'm perfectly comfortable telling you to go ahead & buy what you have speced out right now.

Will,
Unfortunately, when I started building I was going to use old parts and bought the X9 since it was socket 1155. Over the weeks, I caved and bought everything new. I already have all of these parts in hand.
Thanks for the "blessing".
