I am moving from a Synology, and my setup there was to not have any of the shared mounted on boot. I'd have to manually enter my encryption key in the WebUI. This is great because no matter what, no one could get my data if they stole my NAS and all my PC's

I can't seem to find a way to do this with TrueNAS. Is there any way? And where is the encryption key stored in TrueNAS? I'm concerned someone could steal my NAS and get to the data

It's possible if you change from "Key" to a "Passphrase" under the encryption properties. Then it will automatically lock upon shutdown or reboot, and require you to manually unlock it (with the passphrase) to access the data/shares.

Keep in mind this means your System Dataset cannot reside on this pool if you proceed with this. (It will have to be relocated to your bool-pool or another data pool that does not use a passphrase for the top-level root dataset.
