hi all,

since i have serious issues to remind birthdays, I tried out the calendar on my iphone, but that sucks as well, especially if I want to move to a different platform one day.

so I thought about a freenas jail, that just send me an email on a specific date.

does someone know a project like this or has hints how to do that?

I am not sure exactly how the email portion would be handled, as I have not setup such a thing myself, but for the scheduling of the task there is cron which is built-in to FreeBSD and likely remains present on FreeNAS as well.

Well, most if not all integrated calendar products can do that out of the box. Going all the way setting up SOGo might be a bit overkill, possibly someone else can suggest a lean alternative?
The calendar plugin in Nextcloud can do it and Nextcloud might come handy for other purposes, too.

sogo might really be a good way. I also thought about a web gui to have all my different email accounts centralized. in case that adds a calendar to send email notification on events, that would be awesome.

I went with the nextcloud calendar, since sogo is not well enough documented for me to get it working.
for the email thing I went with rainloop
