Hey there,

My NAS hardware info is in the signature below so I won't bore you with the details. Basically I think one of those drives is dying or my FreeNAS settings are incorrect. Every 5 - 10 seconds I hear a crunching sound from one of the drives, but it's like a deep grind and only for half a second or so. I tried to record it but all I got was static from the fans next to it. Tomorrow I will record a better version.

So my question to you is, is my drive dying (it seemed to only start when I rebuilt a pool and doesn't do it when I'm shutting down the nas making me think it's a process doing something weird) and how can I tell what drive is dying, what tools can I run to keep it in healthy shape and will I get a fair warning that the drive is on it's way out or will it just cark it and the pool will go offline.

Thanks in advance,
DarkRyoushii

Run a long smart test on the drive and post back the results. But generally weird sounds coming from the HDD are a good indicator that something is wrong with the drive.

thanks for the reply, is there a gui way to force the test or a command to run? and how do I view the results when completed?

I'm not sure if there is a functionality in the GUI, I think you can just schedule regular smart tests there (which also is a very good idea).

Here is a guide for the shell.

Start a long smart test with:
Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/adaX

Where X is the number of the drive. If you don't know the number, use this command to get a list of all devices:
Code:
camcontrol devlist

When the test is finished after some hours you can access the results with:
Code:
smartctl -q noserial -a /dev/adaX

Alternatively you can do a short test first ('-t short' instead of '-t long'), which will finish within minutes.

Thanks again. After running long smart test on all drives they are all returning
Code:
# 1 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 696 -

including the 2.5" plugins drive I have in there. :\

The Hitachi drives look fine.

Only the Samsung could have an issue: 1 reallocated sector and a non-empty G-Sense Error Rate (according to Wikipedia: The count of errors resulting from externally induced shock & vibration.). This drive is probably not part of your pool anyway, so I wouldn't worry to much.

If your pool offers some redundancy, you are probably OK for now. Just keep an eye (and ear) on the drive producing the sounds and configure regular SMART tests and scrubs so that you'll notice any degradation early on.

Update: Maybe you could try to find out which drive exactly produces the sound? Either by unplugging one drive at a time or listening more closely? If you plan on doing that, I'd start with the 2,5" disk.

One thing did catch my eye.

Code:
225 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 060 060 000 Old_age Always - 406981

Holy freakin' crap! I've never seen that value that high.. ever. Considering the other drives are all zero, I think that's the drive with the problems.

From some small google search that value is the number of times the drive has been parked. That's an extremely large value! I'm wondering if the drive is having an issue with the firmware or otherwise that is making it think it should park and unpark so frequently. WD Green drives can suffer this kind of fate if you don't use the WDIDLE tool, but the 160GB is a Samsung, so I have no advice to provide at all.

But I think that's the drive you are hearing park and unpark. The drive itself may not be bad at all, but if its racking up park/unparkss that fast I have to wonder how long that drive will last before it becomes unreliable. I've never owned any Samsung drives, so I can't provide any additional assistance. I'd try Googling around and see if anyone else has solved this problem(or had this problem). Check for firmware updates(if possible), your SATA controller settings, and definitely backup the data on that drive. :P
