I can probably get a pretty good deal on an Eaton UPS, but I don't know what the compatibility with FreeNAS is like. I've heard that APC and Cyberpower are generally the recommended options due to compatibility reasons.

So would there be a better option than a Cyberpower EC850LCD ($83) or APC Back-UPS BN1080G ($100)? I need a 400-500w for a few minutes.

I can only speak for my own experience with a Cyberpower unit that currently
protects my wireless AP, firewall and server. I had disconnection issues with
the UPS when connected to the FreeNAS server in a Master configuration.
Played with it for weeks before moving the cable over to pfSense box as Master
and configuring FreeNAS as Slave. This solved all my issues.
While I was dealing with trying to make it work with FreeNAS, I googled and
read a gaggle of posts and blogs trying to find patterns that would reveal
some kind of consensus as to which model was best for FreeNAS but it was an
exercise in frustration. I responded to your post having only the need to warn
you about Eaton/NUT situation. As for a recommendation, I just don't have
have any advice other than to avoid cheaping out when it comes to buying
both a PSU AND a UPS. IMHO these two components should always be the
best that you can afford.

Well, the EC850LCD seems to be a more compelling choice due to its size, whereas the APC option is far larger.

If forced to make a choice between those two, I would do a bit of research, giving more importance
to the following features listed in order of priority.
  1. Is the battery unit replaceable?
  2. Is the battery unit availble locally? (they are expensive to ship, due to weight)
  3. The length of the unit's warranty period.
  4. Could a generic battery be installed after the factory unit craps out?
  5. Does the unit have an alarm/beeper and can you mute it when it's triggered.

I'm not restricted to these two, but I think I am restricted to a plug strip style, so I'm open to recommendations.
