Do yourself a favor, and read the reviews on newegg for the WD 3TB reds. There seems to be about 2 failed drives indicated for every good one. I have not taken the time to look at the 1TB or the 2TB reviews so this might be just a 3TB problem at the moment. IDK. I never said that WD "sucks". I have had great luck with the Cav Black and RE enterprise drives. I am not so naive to believe that every drive that WD makes is going to be reviewed on newegg. I am actually starting to believe that my vendor might be a large part of the problem. Packaging for such a large quantity of drives seems shoddy at best.

I have read that thread. In fact, I recently helped a friend buy 10x3TB drives. We had zero failures. In fact, if you look at the WD30EZRX(the drives my friend bought) and the WD30EFRX(WD Reds) the WD30EZRX has a higher percentage of 1 egg reviews and the WD Reds have a higher percentage of 5 eggs. So I'd expect to have more failures from a shipment of WD30EXRX than the WD Reds. If you look around, you'll see lots of people all over the place with multiple drive failures in a single shipment. WD wouldn't be in business if they were continually shipping out bad drives. Getting back bad drives from a retailer is quite expensive(more expensive than an RMA).

So I still stand by my comment that it was more than likely a fluke. All of the drives on all brands have people that bought X drives and had a very high failure rate. In fact, when my friend bought his 10 drive I was expecting at least 2 failures and as many as 5 failures based on the feedback from Newegg and Amazon. I figured that best case we'd see just 1 failure. Imagine my surprise when i had zero failures out of 10 despite all of the bad reviews.

Not to mention, people will complain FAR more than they will praise. I haven't written a review about how awesome my 10 drives are and that they are all in good condition with zero problems. I don't plan to since I didn't do the purchasing either.

My view on reviews... they are a great indication of potential problems you may experience. If everyone is complaining about a firmware issue or other specific issue then you should worry. But complaining that you bought 10 drives and 8 were bad out of the box doesn't say that WD sucks. I promise you that if I dropped your box out of the truck you'd get a bunch of bad drives regardless of what brand you have. Except the average person will also immediately assume WD must suck. Check out Seagates, they don't fare much better. In fact, the highest reviewed 3TB drive(which also happens to be have the highest reviewed ranking) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844 has only a 45% 5 egg score and an "astoundingly low" 23% 1 egg score. While I'd gladly assume that means a 23% failure rate of those that reviewed(who would say their drive works flawlessly and then give it 1 egg?) I also can't believe for a second that roughly 23% of hard drives shipped by Seagate are DoA.

At the end of the day, believe what you want. Its your data you are trusting with the drives. I'll make my best decision with all available knowledge just as I'm sure you will. We just come to different conclusions based on the information presented. Neither one is wrong for our opinion...

Right on! I got the Seagate replacement drives in from Newegg and they all tested fine. In the mean time another one of the WD Red drives failed while I was creating the Volume. I have a feeling that the box of drives that was shipped to me was punted off of a truck before it made it to my office. I would be surprised at this point if all of these drives do not end up failing in short order. I am in direct contact with WD at this time and they are trying to come up with a solution. For the record, I never said WD "sucks". I will say that the 10 WD Red drives that newegg shipped to me SUCK BIG TIME! The one thing that is consistent with the reviews that we both have refered to is that they are on Newegg shipped parts. I have not checked the reviews of customers that ordered from other vendors.

So on a happy note.......

8.3 is running like a champ in my customers rack. I took Noobsauce80's advice and went with a couple of Raid-Z2 volumes Ext.
No dedupe or compression.
I mixed the drives up. 3X 3TB WD red and 3X 3TB Seagate ES.2 drives per volume.
32GB ecc Kingston RAM
AMD FX4100 CPU
Istar 15 bay Rack 4U chassis w/700W redundant PSU.
Intel Dual 10/100/1000Mbs NIC.

Performance is very good so far. I will be pouring it on over the holidays to see what this baby's got. Thanks for all the help with the ZFS questions.

Mike.

If I were you I'd run SMART long tests on all of your drives just to see if they pass before you start putting data on them.

The really crappy part about all of this is that I'm watching Red drives closely to see if they fare better or worse than Green drives on FreeNAS systems. With people like you that have a whole bunch of failures is that an indication of a dropped box or a situation where Reds just suck. It could be that Reds are somehow more susceptible to damage if they are dropped than Greens too. It could be that the whole lot of Red drives you received had a serious firmware defect too. Unfortunately, we will never know :(

I never thought you said WD sucks.
