Well... that's what I though when I started thinking about it.
The problem for someone like me is deciding which bit of advice is applicable to me and which is way above and beyond what I need.
Perhaps your advice is just what I need, but I don't know enough to be able to decide (at the moment).

My current 2 bay, dinky NAS (bought some time ago off the shelf), although slow, gives me some breathing space, to learn before deciding on the next step.

Who's advice was over your head? I think most of the stuff so far has been pretty reasonable.

I didn't say that anything was un-reasonable (particularly in this thread).
What I meant was that there is so much info out there, and there are so many features and options in NAS, that it is difficult to choose what is important and how to do things without spending considerable time educating myself.
What is obvious and simple to you takes some learning to us, mere mortals :p
