Hey everyone really sorry but I'm new to this system.

At the moment I run windows xp with my hdds in it which primarily runs as a dlna server for my ps3...other than running as a server for extra files it doesn't get used... So I think freenas will work for me...but do I need clean hdds to be able to set this system up?

Thanks in advance

Nope. Volume Manager will happily reformat those drives for you.

You want to stick Windows drives (presumably NTFS, but you didn't specify) in a FreeNAS system? It's possible, but you're not going to get any of the benefits of ZFS if you do this. The Importing Volumes section of the manual is where you'll want to focus. After you've read the whole manual to familiarize yourself with FreeNAS first, of course.
