as above.

I believe my Asus a85x mATX motherboard is UEFI only as the "BIOS" setup is GUI-based. (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/A85XMA/)

All the card's SAS ports will be used for personal data storage/archive.

You don't need the option ROM at all if you don't want it. However, some of us find it convenient for debugging. I prefer to be able to validate that things are working prior to booting into FreeNAS. Lots of other people do not see the value to that, and that's fine, or have problems getting their mainboard to order the attached drives in the correct manner so that your FreeNAS boot device is selected first, or other similar crap.
