Hello. I'm new to TrueNAS or even networking. I don't even know what most of the abbreviations are and trying to figure it out in Google. What I want to do is to be able to share files with my brother via Nextcloud in Truenas. We are living in seperate houses so he doesn't have access to my network. I have an static ip from ISP. Nearly on every guide and video i can see people using 2 ethernet adapters. But noone said anything about do we need it or not. I guess one is for internal and the other one is for external or i'm missing something and totally wrong? Which way do i need to go for this? I will gladly continue to read manuals, forums and watch many videos if you say this is the way or not.

I would be glad if you help. Thanks in advance.

You only need 1 unless you're trying to make a router (not what TrueNAS is designed for) or use LACP or some kind of fail-over.
Since you're new, I highly doubt you'd need/want any of those.

What you need is a VPN, which DOES require another adapter, but a VIRTUAL one, not a real adapter.

Thank you for quick reply. I will try to figure out how to open VPN on a virtual adapter then.

Thanks again.

I would advise not to worry too much about the virtual adapter part.

Just follow the steps you are given for how you want to implement the VPN you choose. It will simply have the creation of the virtual adapter as part of the steps. Sometimes the virtual adapter part is really, really simple like with Nord VPN on windows it literally just prompts asking whether its ok for the software to create the adapter and all you do is click 'yes'. Regardless, I can nearly guarantee there won't be any extra steps outside of the walk-through on how to setup the chosen VPN method.

I was just about to go for the virtual part, nice warning :) So this leads me to going to find a VPN setup walkthrough. I'm feeling closer to (still a mystery because of my lack of knowledge) achieve this now thanks for two helpful comments. Thank you.
