I'm not using a Domain, Active Directory, or the like. I'm using local IP addresses given out by my gateway, such as 192.168.1.75.

How do I make it publish its Name, so other machines on my LAN can find it using the name? Out of the box, doing a
ping freenas
doesn't resolve, and
ping freenas.local
resolves to 69.16.143.110, which is not what I expected.

Use your router/gateway to manage your DNS. We don't know your setup so we couldn't tell you how to do it. I have a windows active directory domain and have all my DNS functions handled by my domain controllers.

Most routers give you an option to make static entries, host names, etc.

If you are using a Tomato-based router, you can do what I've done.
I just put all my DNS names in my router in a file called hosts in the jffs file system that gets loaded by dnsmasq during bootup with addn-hosts parameter.

I'm using the LAN/WAN gateway that came with my TimeWarner broadband service. It's made by Motorola, and it's the box with the DHCP server.
