Hi,

I bought the above network card as it said in the BSD site that it was compatible. I installed the card but FreeNAS doesn't pick it up even though I disable the Realtek card that's in my box and have reinstalled FreeNAS.

Please help.

Thanks.

My first piece of advice is: return the D-Link and get an Intel... Intel NICs are well-supported by FreeBSD (on which FreeNAS is based), while D-Link is more problematic: they do things like change the chipset used on the same model of network card and so forth, which makes them hard to support.

In the meantime, make sure your system BIOS is set up to load the option ROM for the PCIe slot where you installed the D-Link card. While you're looking at BIOS settings, make sure everything else looks normal w/respect to the PCIe settings.

That's about all I can think of at the moment... it really ought to 'Just Work'.

What for? It doesn't have an option ROM. Some Realtek PCI chipsets could take an option ROM (I saw them used to load supervisor software that dug its claws into Windows, kinda like IPMI on steroids - it could do remote control, remote screen blanking to draw the students' attention to the whiteboard and such things).

Also, the D-Link card is going to use a Realtek chip. The infamous RTL8111 family. Eww.

The part number changed from DGE560T to DGE520T. But I agree with the others, a real Intel card is inexpensive and avoids problems.

Yeah unfortunately my dog chewed the box of the d'link so can't return that. But I have ordered an intel card. Should be arriving by end of the week. Thanks for the help

Yes, you've changed the NIC, so FreeNAS is loading a different network driver for which it doesn't have any settings. You will need to re-configure the network settings on the console to set up the new NIC.

Try option one and set the interface up. Should go through and likely have an em0 to set up. Plug in the information it needs to access the network and go from there. Also need to make sure the cat5 is plugged into the intel NIC.

What NIC did you pick up? And was it brand new or second hand?

Might also try option 9 and then do try

ifconfig

then see if the nic is showing.

Reset the network configuration, i.e., after you select em0 from console item 1) Configure Network Interfaces, answer 'y' when it asks Reset network configuration? (y/n).

Then configure the interface again...
