Hi guys and thanks for a wonderful software.

I would like some help with a few questions if anyone got the time.
I'm pretty new to FreeBSD but know my way around linux.

I run FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2-x64 (r12686+b770da6_dirty) on 2 boxes with the same setup execpt from the harddrives and it have worked out very well until now.

I have had issues with one disc in this machine before when it ran linux so i susspect its the same one (Not sure yet, but i will try to find my receipt for it to see the serial number)

Anyhow, here's what i want to do and as it is my first time i would like to check with the pro's first.

Replace the broken disc with a new one and resilver.

I did a raid-z setup with 4 3TB discs so that should not be a problem i suppose?, but the zpool is gone and if i do a "zpool list" in a shell it tells me "no pools available"

Whats my next step now to replace the disc?

Here is my error on the disc btw.

Well, it looks like your drives are all detected, and the partitions and such are there.

How about smartctl -a -q noserial /dev/ada0

Ok.. so that drive is definitely having problems. Try shutting down the server so it powers off, wait 30 seconds, power it back up and run that smartctl command again. Hopefully the drive will work just long enough to get a different output.

Hi again, I've tried 3 times now without luck, anyhow.. I dont really care about this disc as it has haunted me for 2 years

Is it possible to remove it and replace it with a new and resilver?

Sure! Follow the FreeNAS manual for disk replacement. ;)

It's very simple and easy. And if you do every step, in order, just like its written, you'll have no problems.

I will warn you that with RAIDZ1 you have no redundancy. So replacing the failed disk should be your top priority right now. If you don't replace it and another disk starts having problems, you may lose your entire pool.

Excuse me if this is a dumb question but you mean that i dont have any redundancy NOW, as one of the disc is out?

When the pool was intact and working it was allright if one disc failed, i just replace it with another one? almost as raid5 right?

radiz2 maybe would be better, if one disc fails as i resilver im lost right?

Anyhow, I will replace the broken disc next weekend, following the tutorial and the pool with my data will work again yes?

Thanks /Joakim

You are correct with everything you said.

You have no redundancy. Even a single sector failure on one of your remaining disks could spell disaster. It's happened, frequently. That's why I've got the "RAID5 is dead" link in my sig. The risk is enormous while rebuilding the pool. You stress the disks during rebuilds, so its a very inopportune time for things to go bad.

I see, bad choice from the start with other words.

But i dont see any other choice right now, or do you have any smart suggestion that would help me from my cousin (wich owns the box) strangles me if the resilver fails?

Is it possible to mount a part of a pool and copy the most important data from it or maybe remove the broken disc to another computer hoping it will start there and do an image of that disc with dd and write that to another 3TB disc?

The pool should be mounting and working right now. Is it not still auto-mounting? Normally, if the pool is listed in the GUI it should be trying to mount it. If it's not mounting, then you may have problems.

If things aren't mounting you should be able to use the auto-import feature to import the pool.

You can't resilver the missing drive without the pool being mounted, so if the pool isn't in a condition where it is mountable, then you have bigger problems than just a failed disk.

Oh my :)

No its not mounting anything, and I cant import as the status of the pool is unknown.

Yeah, UNKNOWN is the normal output when a pool isn't mounted. No cause for alarm there.

But if it's not mounting now, that's a bad thing!

Try this command:

zpool import -R /mnt RAID-Z

Before i try that, try to make sense of this crazy thing that just happened as i am totally lost.

I did a restart and tried some smartctl -a on ada0 again and it worked, i got the info and no errors.

Can I suspect the ram or maybe even the motherboard?

I know there was 2 files on the ZFS pool that was corrupt, (moved to FreeNAS corrupted from another filesystem) could that be an issue, with bad checksums or something like that?

Well, if the old ada0 is no longer being detected, then the old ada1 would be ada0. Notice you had ada0 through ada3, now you have ada0 through ada2. That's why you should never label your disks with stickers that say "ada0". They can change in an instant. Basically, it looks like you have no way of proving the status of the old disk, and should give up trying to troubleshoot it further. It's very broken.

Previously corrupted files will simply be checksumed in their current state. The checksums will only find new corruption if it exists since you've put the files on ZFS.

Aha yes ofcourse, well then...

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool import -R /mnt RAID-Z
cannot import 'RAID-Z': I/O error
Destroy and re-create the pool from
    a backup source.

Yeah.. sounds like you had some corruption somewhere, and now that you lost one drive, it's gone.

See that link in my sig? Lost pools like yours are precisely why I have that in my signature. ;)

Can you post the smart data for the rest of your disks? And your hardware specs? Curious to see how your system went to crap so fast. Surely you've made other errors besides just a failed RAIDZ1 disk.

Edit: Situations like this are precisely why I offer my services via paypal. Almost everyone that is new to FreeNAS makes more than 1 mistake, and almost always have more than 1 serious mistake. So pools that appear to have redundancy may not be as reliable as people think because of those mistakes. It's too bad too, for most people, they'd consider it money very well spent to ensure they aren't a statistic. But hey, everyone is here for the "Free" in FreeNAS, so I shouldn't be surprised.

This will be awesome to tell my cousin, like a trip on lsd.

"Hello, all your data is poop, GOODBYE!"

Maybe if i send the 3 working drives to a company that is specialized in retriving data?
