I've just setup a new machine with FreeNAS 11.1 32bit (hehe, just kidding) and I see by default the root dataset has atime enabled.

My question is: what might break if I disable atime there? I'm going to create child datasets for different shares/users anyway and frankly I'm not going to enable atime on any of them.

P.S. "Array1", "Array2", etc. are not reserved names, are they?

What are you going to access on the root dataset, anyway?

Sure, but if there's nothing being accessed, atime won't get updated either.

Do child datasets have an entry in the parent that gets updated every time those datasets are accessed?

So you're saying disabling atime for the root dataset shouldn't break anything?
