So when I read that you shouldn't try and use a bunch of sharing services on one dataset, I proceeded to move everything into separate datasets. Now, the original pool volume shows that the space for all the files I had (about 1.6T) is still taken up, but the file structure is nearly gone. Is there any way to resurrect the structure, or are they just 1s and 0s with no way to come home?

Thanks
Brian

You need to make sure the files are not in use, just then the filesystem will clear space.

Also make sure you dont have snapshots:

# zfs list -t snapshot

There isn't anything accessing them. I have turned off all sharing services excluding SMART. I went to the zfs snapshot and got rid of the one snapshot I made. 'ls' in the original directory shows nothing still.
