Hello,

I'm putting the finishing touches on my new TrueNAS server.

For several years I ran TrueNAS in a Proxmox VM and for this I used a:
dell perc h310 sas sata 6gb/s controller.
This was easy to passtrough in ProxMox and functioned well.

My new server is located in an Inter-Tech IPC 4U-4408 case with a backplane with a sas 8087 connection.

My motherboard (Asus WS 246m PRO) also has 8x 6gb/s sata connection.

To free up space in the PCIe slots for eg a 10g network card, I would like to use the sata ports on my motherboard.

Are there things I should pay attention to? or are there reasons to stick with the dell perc h310?

since both are 6gb/s I assume performance won't matter?

Thank you very much for your responses.

As the C246 chipset provides up to 8 SATA ports natively, there should not be any issue, neither from performance nor from compatibility point of view.
You just need to pay some attention for connecting those SATA ports to your SAS 8087 backplane. Make sure you use reverse breakout cables (from SATA host to SAS device). Most SAS to SATA cables work vice versa, means from SAS host to SATA devices and will not work.
And, of course you will not be able to use SAS disks or SAS SSD, you will stick to SATA ones.
