Good day!

I have tested Freenas for a while now,
with a lot of configurations, also tided OpenIndiana, with Napp-it.

Now i have hit a wall for some time.
I dont want to use HW Raid, but SW, and ZFS v28

Since i got all my pars from Dell, then i also have their RAID controllers.
I have read a lot of how H800 shall use Raid 0 on all disks, i did test it, but i felt kinda scared off it, if the controller fails so on.
Then i tested H810, same resault, and then at the end i used Perc 6 Dell H200

Even tho , H800/810 says it´s JBOD then i dont see the disks at all in Freenas or OpenIndiana.
thats why i have to use RAID 0, or HW Raid. is this a bug ? or is it a configuration error ?

When i Use the H200 controller, then i can create a pool, and find the disks.
It works, without flashing the controller to LSI LT firmware.

Now i have a ZFS pool up and running, but Freenas cant see the disks, on "view disk" or "view multipath" (i use 2 SAS cabels, so its multipath) but the pool worked, i find that strange.

With OpenIndiana, i could not create a pool at all with the disks, cause the disk name where to long.

So here is my question.

Why cant i see my disks from the H200 card ?
What if a disk fails now, will ill be able to rebuild the system from terminal?

I think it can be the firmware on the DellDisks that fucks things up, but dont know.

So are you saying that if you setup a hardware RAID then the RAID is accessible, but as a bunch of JBOD disks they aren't available even on the same controller?

If so, then I'd say its not a bug but probably something to do with the implementation of JBOD on the controller.

As a general rule, if your hard drives don't "Just Work" then there isn't support for FreeBSD/FreeNAS.

Well, when using HW Raid on H800 or H810 then the disk will show up, as a md Disk,
if i dont choose a Raid, then the disks will not show up. so JBOD is ... wierd on H800/810

That´s when i switched the RAID controller to H200,

The H200 shows all the disks, in Terminal, so i can ssh inn, and see them
i also can see the disks, when creating a pool.

So i created a pool, with the web interface, cause i can see the disks there.
But when i open the "view disk" or "View multipath" then i dont see the disks, that just have been added to a pool ;)

strange ?

I knows it's an old thread, but just in case someone comes across the same question as I did. PERC H810 doesn't support JBOD mode, which is why you can't see any of the drives unless you run RAID 0 which is ridiculously dangerous on these PERCs. The new generation H830 does support JBOD though so that's the next best option if you want to use these PERC cards.
