Good morning,

We have built a FreeNAS 8.3 device for our development environment. We already have a high priced SAN in our production environment.

For our FreeNAS setup we have 8 2TB drives with 4 SSD drives for caching/logging. We set it up as a RaidZ2 and we created one giant volume. Below the volume we want to create separate stores for our different development environments. Let's call them DevA, DevB, DevC.

Our question is what's the best way to go about this? Should we create Datasets or Volumes? With Datasets we seem to have more options (amount of storage available, dedup, etc), but perhaps that is not best practice. Also the datasets seem to give you better reporting options. If we create a volume with 650GB for example, it doesn't seem to know how much of that 650GB is used up.

I have done a lot of reading but can't seem to find a solid answer for this question, just looking for some help/advice.
