I'm curious what the dataset share type = windows means versus setting up a CIFS share under the Share menu?

Thanks

datasets are like filesystems on zfs and cifs shares is a protocol to access that data. When changing the dataset type you are forcing the dataset to use a certain type of permissions, posix in the unix case and ACL's in the windows case. When you configure a share(cifs) or export(nfs) you are just allowing for a way to access that data over a certain protocol.

That makes alot of sense. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it that way to begin with.

Is there a trick then to get Windows to save ACLs over to the NAS share that is set for windows ACL? I ran a test last night and the ownership and perms of transfered files are the user I set it FreeeNAS for the CIFS share.

Thanks

Greg
