I have been experiencing this annoying issue since I upgraded to 9.10-STABLE. Basically I get these entries in dmesg once and a while (about 2x/week)

Sep 17 08:53:24 freenas upsd[57509]: Data for UPS [APCBR1500G] is stale - check driver
Sep 17 08:53:25 freenas upsd[57509]: UPS [APCBR1500G] data is no longer stale

I have tried the following:
  • Changing USB port (on the server);
  • Double checking USB port number (ugen1.3) was the right one in the UPS service:
usbconfig:

Code:
ugen0.1: <EHCI root HUB Intel> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)
ugen1.1: <EHCI root HUB Intel> at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)
ugen1.2: <product 0x0024 vendor 0x8087> at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)
ugen0.2: <product 0x0024 vendor 0x8087> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)
ugen1.3: <Back-UPS BR1500G FW865.L2 .D USB FWL2 American Power Conversion> at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=FULL (12Mbps) pwr=ON (2mA)
ugen0.3: <Hermon USB hidmouse Device Winbond Electronics Corp> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=FULL (12Mbps) pwr=ON (100mA)
ugen0.4: <USB 2.0 Hub vendor 0x1a40> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=SAVE (100mA)
ugen0.5: <USB Flash Drive Lexar> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=ON (500mA)
ugen0.6: <DataTraveler 3.0 Kingston> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps)

Service is configured as this:

UPS Mode: Master
IdentifierL APCBR1500G
Driver: APC ups 2 Back-UPS Pro USB USB (usbhid-ups)
Port: /dev/ugen1.3
Monitor user: upsmon
Monitor Password: fixmepass

Freenas: FreeNAS-9.10.1 (d989edd)

Whats wrong?

It's USB flakiness, probably related to the EHCI driver. I used to have that problem, but I've yet to see it happen on my Skylake system with 9.10 (Skylake uses XHCI exclusively for USB).

HAHAHA and some people on this forum wants to run ZFS pools on USB connected drives??

:eek::confused:o_O

So nothing to do about this? UPS service will work in case of power failure and shutdown the server as configured int he UPS service?

Well, many people use USB boot devices and those work fine. It must be some odd timing issue involving a USB/UART bridge or some such thing.

So nothing to do about this?
There were some workarounds, but they were of dubious usefulness.

It should be fine, note that the staleness lasts a second. On my server, it used to be relatively rare, though unpredictable (~1 per hour on a bad day).

I actually hadnt noticed how the "glitch" lasted only a second... I guess if it happens once or twice a week is not a big deal. I will let it go for now until a patch or something is done my the devs (if there is a need to).

BTW my comment for running ZFS pools on Usb drives was not directed towards boot drives as I myself use a pair of usb sticks (mirrored) as boot drives, but for actual data pools running on 2-3-4 TB external drives like WD MyBook or these things.....
