Hi,

I've already tried to change all sata cables, also switched all ports for hdd with no more result. Board has intel controler one side and marvell the other one, all HDD are
WD RED , system boot on a 120Go ssd mirror.
Messages are concerning always ada3 and also often ipmi0
I've done a RMA change with asrock so the board is new with latest firmware and bios.

If you have any idea on what to check , and do you think it's a big problem or not because i don't see any problem in using the NAS

Hi,

I'm using the same motherboard and I experienced similar issues ( CAM status errors) although not completely the same errors.

Code:
(da4:umass-sim0:0:0:0): WRITE(10). CDB: 2a 00 00 6b 4c 29 00 00 01 00
(da4:umass-sim0:0:0:0): CAM status: CCB request completed with an error
(da4:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Retrying command

I encountered these errors when using the onboard marvell controllers...
It worked fine with 6 disks (on the intel controller) and when I upgraded from 6 to 8 disks, everything was fine for some months (ok I did have few occurrences of this error but manageable... that is for a backup/test system) but then (all of a sudden) it started to get much more frequent and very annoying (sometime I had two disks dropping out so I went for the M1015 solution!)!!

In your case it could be something else it would bet on the marvell controller. Check on which controller your ada3 is connected to.

Hi,
Thanks for your answer, if we have all the same issue with this MB this is surely a board driver problem on marvell side or with freebsd driver ?
for now i can't check where ada3 is plugged into but is more than sure is on marvell side. I ordered on Amazon a new controller Syba SI-PEX40062 for a very small price 31 €.
When the new controler will be inside , will it be better to put boot drive on it or data drives?

SI-PEX40062

That one also uses a Marvell chipset, and while the Marvell controllers on those Asrock boards are generally more prone to issues, you should IMO avoid any Marvell controller, if 2 ports are enough you can use an Asmedia based controller like the SY-PEX40039, if you need more than 2 ports go with an LSI HBA.

Yeah, a pity these onboard marvell controllers can't be used/trusted! ;-((
Because that's why this board is so interesting, 12 SATA ports! but it was too late when I heard about those Marvell controllers... :-O

I also considered adding an Asmedia controller but then the price difference with an LSI HBA (granted, a second hand one) was not that big and at least you have something working... (ok, well in my case I may have some issues with the LSI HBA as well, I'll have to dig into it and I might call for help in an other threat!)

I found something on Leboncoin, I got mine for 45€ (you can find it a bit cheaper on ebay also)... it's worth to consider (and it's money well spent since they are quite famous and you'll always need one some day! :-D).

Well, I don't know... as I said in the thread, some report the card working well even though being a Marvell controller.
When I started to look into it, I just thought that I didn't want to take the risk and I went the LSI route... I know, not very courageous! :-D

If you already bought it, I'd say, just try it out and see for yourself!
I would just advise not to put all your disks on the Marvell... And make sure you have proper backups.

In my case, I had a RAIDz2 pool with 8 drives, I only put 2 drives on the Marvell.
At the beginning, I had issues only with one drive and a reboot solved it. Since I had 2 drive redundancy, it was ok (and since it was my backup system).
But after a while it was very annoying because it was throwing out 2 drives at a time and more frequently, leaving the pool without redundancy and with some checksum errors on the volume. That's when I decided I had enough!
