Current Boot Drive recommendations? SSD or USB?

I'm coming from Freenas 11.3.

I've attempted to upgrade like 3 times now to Truenas Core but i've always had to revert due to the system not wanting to boot at all., or other issues once it finally does get booted. Then when i reboot, it refuses to boot again.

In 11.3 I'm using 2x usb drives in a mirroed config, however i've heard that Truenas core likes a standalone SSD better. I can't find any documentation on that.

Are there any official recommendations for the type and size of drive to use for boot OS?
I'm probably in the middle of a total volume loss due to failed disks, luckily everything is backed up. So if i attempt to run Truenas Core again, it'll be with probably 20tb drives, but i want to get this boot issue fixed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"not wanting to boot at all" is a bit vague. Some more detail possible?

What medium where you trying to use as a boot device? What version of TrueNAS did you try to install?

What about BIOS vs. UEFI?
