I see that a lot of people are using crashplan and are having no issues with it but it's not behaving like how I imagined it would.

Is it correct that every time I want to connect my desktop with crashplan on my freenas I have to start up the ssh server on the freenas with "etc/rc.d/sshd onestart" and then connect to the crashplan on the freenas using putty? Only then can I pull up the crashplan application to view the status of the backup? Every time I restart either freenas or my desktop, I have to reinitiate the ssh connections?

Back when I owned a synology nas, I was used to just double clicking the crashplan app on my desktop and it would automatically show the status of the nas backup. Since that's the only one of my devices that is linked to crashplan, it's the only one I really care about.

Am I doing it wrong or is it really this complicated to view the status of the backup?

EDIT: Even if I restart my desktop and freenas, as long as the crashplan app is turned on, it should be backing up right? Or do I have reinitiate the connection for it to even back up?

You should not be starting ssh from the CLI for FreeNAS. The WebGUI has a switch to start/stop SSH.. use it.

If you are referring to starting ssh for the jail, you should see how to setup ssh in FreeBSD to autostart when the jail starts.

As for your question in the edit, I don't know. There's like 28000 apps you can run in the jail, so we don't support the apps in the jail themselves. Maybe someone knows though..

As far as the instructions on the Crashplan page for headless operation, yes you would have to reconnect the SSH session each restart. I'm sure there's a way to configure it to where you wouldn't have to, but for now I'm leaving both systems on full-time. It's definitely on my to-do list for FreeNAS which is quite extensive...

I want to make sure I understand this correctly: even once it's all set up and working, should the FreeNAS server be restarted, Crashplan will not be running and no backups will be done until you connect again remotely via the Crashplan client from another computer to restart the service?

I find that a rather unacceptable way to have a server be run. :( If this is indeed the case, does anyone know of efforts at iX to resolve this, or an alternative to Crashplan that will auto-start on boot?

Offsite backups are pretty much the last thing I need to figure out as I plan my NAS server, but as I intend to have it on a UPS and auto-shutdown on power fail (frequent where I live), I need it to graciously recover on power-restore without manual intervention.

The last part is harder, but you can get a larger UPS and have the server run normally for a while before shutting down, mitigating the issue a bit.

It will start back up every time without having to make a ssh connection. The ssh connection just let's you change the settings on the server.
