Hi Guys, I have read around the web about Couchpotato and if I understood it right it's a tool where I can search for movie and music, which then automatically will land on my FreeNas Box after a while. How is the legal point on that one? I'm based in Europe and could think that this wouldn't be that legal. Especially if I do seeding. What are your experience?

Is it easy to install and do I need to pay for a Usenet or does the free ones offer enough?

best regards

Couchpotato doesn't do music, just movies. If you download via usenet, there is no seeding. It's up to you to determine whether it's legal in your situation and/or whether you want to take the risk (such as it is) of downloading illegally.

I'd be very surprised if a free Usenet host offered the bandwidth and retention you'd want to make such a tool worthwhile.

Well so what are the most users doing so far? I thought always that Usenet could do the job.

Some stuff is available by torrent that isn't via usenet, and vice versa. With torrents, there's the possibility that you'll upload some portion of whatever you're downloading; with usenet, it's strictly download--this may affect your evaluation of the legality of what your doing, as well as of your risk of getting caught if you believe it's illegal. Torrents are free; usenet service (with binary support and good retention) is likely to cost. Couchpotato supports both torrents and usenet; you can use either or both.

I'm in the USA. I use Astraweb as my primary Usenet provider and the European-based SSL-News as my backup provider. I chose Astraweb because of their retention, speed and that I was able to purchase a block of data. My last 1000GB lasted me 1.5 years @ $50USD. I then chose SSL-News because they have servers in the Netherlands (if I'm remembering my research correctly) and therefore if there ARE takedown requests for a particular TV show or movie then it takes much longer to hit their servers and therefore my download completes if SABnzbd was missing some blocks from Astraweb. Another reason for SSL-N was because of their price/block. FWIW, I believe the actual company is in Spain.

Cool, I was planning on checking out SSL-News as a backup. Current primary is UsenetServer.

Full disclosure: I have had several no-completes with SSL-N. Prior to using them I had Tweaknews as my backup which would almost always complete. I switched because of TN's price point compared to SSL-N. I may switch back when my quota runs out if I continue to get no-completes.
