What is the correct procedure to upgrade?
Simplest is to download your current config file, do a clean installation of FreeNAS onto the new device, and upload that config file. Unless you're using pool encryption, that's all you need.
What if I can't export my settings from my previous setup?
Why wouldn't you be able to? Is there something wrong with your current boot device?

For some reason it works for a couple of min after booting up and then it just goes offline. I hooked up a screen on it and I don't see any errors, it just says the regular message freenas webgui at 192.168... So I'm guessing that maybe the USB stick is not reliable enough (weird because I had this system running for at least 3 years). But since the doc says that the newer versions of freenas needs something more reliable than usb sticks I rather just upgrade.

Is this https://www.amazon.ca/Kingston-Digital-120GB-SA400S37-120G/dp/B01N6JQS8C recommended? Are there any specifications for the drive? I want to make sure that I have something that meets the requirements
