I have in my home a small networks which consists of a FreeNas server and several computers that for the most part display movies etc. I have at present a non-smart desktop based D-Link gigabyte 8-port switch (DGS-1008A) that works well.
I thought that with having eight ports I would be fine until the end of time however this is proving not to be the case.
Having now just one port available I need to consider my options. My switch and routers are in a very small space near my main computer so I need an upgrade path that has a small foot print and my thinking is to get a second identical
DGS-1008A switch and link them together and have them stack on top of each other.
My question is, to link them together I believe I would need a cross-over Ethernet cable supporting 1Gbps speed.
Is this the case?
Is there any other considerations that I need to be aware of?

Thank you in advance for you assistance.

Keep in mind that you'll only have a single gigabit link between the two switches. You won't therefore, be able to sustain 1 Gb/sec traffic from switch A, port 1 to switch B, port 1, at the same time as 1 Gb/sec traffic from switch A, port 2 to switch B, port 2. Consider that when deciding which devices to plug into which switches.

Yes I am aware that no matter how one configures switches one is still limited to the Max. 1Gbps speed limit.
Thanks for the follow up!
