Freenas newbie alert!

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to set up my first freenas server and have found the forums to be a gold mine of useful information. The hardware part was reasonably straight forward once I decided to play it safe and follow all the recommendations in cyberjock's PowerPoint. Software installation was also a breeze but I've been unable to get my CIFS shares properly set up.

I've read everything I can get my hands on from the user manual to the various topics in the forum to Internet sources like youtube, etc. with no luck. I realised that my failure and confusion may have been due to mixing and matching info sources that were probably applicable to earlier versions of freenas and decided to come back to the manual, again with no luck.

My current situation is that my users, groups, volumes and shares have been created and shares are visible from my Windows machine. However, I am not able to log in to the shares that require password access nor do i have write access to the ones that should be open.

A simplified version of what I am trying to achieve is the following:

1. Two primary Users A and B with guest user access for the public share (ShareD).
2. Shares A and B owned by respective users (password access) but with User A also having full access to Share B (not vice versa).
3. Share C that gives Users A and B read and write access but no one else.
4. Share D that gives gives Users A, B and guests read and write access with no passwords.
5. Share E that gives Users and guests read access but only User A full access.
6. Would like Users A and B to be different from the windows logins if possible to allow access from any windows (or Android) device.

As I mentioned above, I've tried all sorts of variations with the latest being the version in the user manual with no luck so would appreciate a step by step on how to achieve the following. I'm happy to start from scratch if necessary as I have no data on the NAS.

Thanks in advance!

Post following information:
  • Smb4.conf (located under /usr/local/etc)
  • Hardware details for server
  • Output of 'getfacl /mnt/[pool]/[share]'
  • Any interesting error messages in your logs 'cat /var/log/samba4/log.smbd'
  • Output of 'net groupmap list'
  • Output of 'getent group'

Enclose the above in 'code tags'

Update: I dusted off an old IBM laptop and used that to access the shares with no issues so it appears that my problems were due to the (work) laptop I was using. My company tries to close them down quite a bit so I guess there's some setting that wasn't playing nicely with freenas. In any case, my shares appear to be behaving as expected for now.

Anodos, thanks for the offer of help.
