Hi, I'm new to FreeNAS, I have a Dell poweredge 1800 with 8GB RAM and a single channel SAS 150GB disk, and 2 sata 1TB each.

Can I install freenas on the SAS disk and create a RAID 1 configuration for the sata disks using ZFS software RAID?

Will probably consume alot of power.. I'd probably pull the 150gb SAS.. Use a USB? Does it USB boot? Disc drive? I would mirror the 1tb yes..

Yes it boots from USB I just wanted to keep the files separated from the system, but if it's more power consumption I'll follow your tip, USB boot install everything and use only the RAID.

Thanks a lot.

Do I have to close the thread or anything?

Yes use a mirror with two drives.. I wouldn't mix and match drives..

Don't use hardware RAID. If mixed with ZFS, disaster can strike. Read the doc's - the warning is there.

Yeah.. I'm doing data recovery right now as a result from hardware RAID + ZFS. Don't do it!

But isn't ZFS + soft RAID secure? So should I use the drives apart? My idea is to use soft RAID not hardware.

Also I'm booting from a USB Sick and it shows:

F1 FreeNAS
F2 FreeNAS
F3 Disk0

Boot: F1 #####################################

and never stops filling the screen with ######### what could be wrong, i am trying to follow the documentation step by step, but cannot move on.

Oh and thanks for all the support.

Nevermind I found a post about being stuck on bootloader from cyberjock and it helped me finding other ways.

Oh and thanks for all the support.
