Apologies if this is too lame a question to ask but is it possible to have one ZFS volume and one UFS? My current FreeNAS configuration relies on an old Dell laptop with built in 60GB drive and an external 1TB drive. Currently both drives are UFS which I am afraid rules out using Jail and plugins.

My two primary worries are that such a combination won't work and my old Dell will not be able to handle ZFS, even if not in RAID mode.

Yes, it's possible to have both UFS and ZFS. You can now also have jails and plugins using UFS. The biggest concern with using ZFS is adequate memory, 4GB is really the absolute minimum, 6GB is the documented minimum.

Post your system specs if you want opinions on how well it will handle ZFS.

Cheers!

Thanks for the prompt reply protosd. I was specifically looking for a step-by-step guide about how to set up jail on UFS but couldn't find anything. All guides have ZFS by default and yt videos are the same unfortunately. Following this guide http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Plugins I ended up with a total mess on my small drive and I couldn't start transmission plugin at all after first system reboot (I have created a separate topic about this here: http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?7901-Serious-problems-with-transmission-and-plugins-jail). Maybe if I could do the jail setup properly in the first place it would be much easier!
