I have access to a retired Cisco WAVE (Wide Area Virtualization Engine) Model 7541.
This is basically a server, used for Wide Area Network optimization.
I believe it is loosely based on a Dell PowerEdge C1600, but cannot verify this.
This particular piece of equipment does not have any traditional server type ports, like keyboard, mouse, video, etc..
The back of this device only has power supplies.
The front has dual 1gig ethernet ports; a Cisco console port; a single USB A port and a single micro USB port (used an alternate console port)
Generally, the specs are two Intel E56xx Xeon processors (quad or hex core) and up to 96gigs of RAM.
It has eight 2.5" drive bays with an unknown RAID Controller
My device has 12 gigs of ram and six 450gig 10K SAS Drives.

My desire is to make this a NAS box.
I am seeking an education.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of server hardware and if so, where would I start?
While freely admit there is a gazillion to one chance of installing any other operating system on this device...
...I thought I would stop and ask, before this device is tossed into the e-waste bin.

Thank you!
