I upgraded my Freenas to 9.3 recently and am having troubles with setting up a CIFS share. I started over because I had a hard drive fail. But my current settings are one user (ID 1001), primary group wheel, home directly is the share folder, everything else is default. In my volume I made one primary dataset called windowshare, all settings default. Setup a CIFS share pointing towards windowshare with the settings default. CIFS settings changed file mask to 0644, directory mask 0755, server min protocl smb2, sever max protocol smb3, everything else default.

Whenever I try to connect to the share in Windows I keep getting access denied. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

Start over.

CIFS permissions to sane defaults and assign owners.
Have owners log in to the shares via Windows and edit permissions there.

Sorry but what do you mean by assign owners? thanks for the help
Assign the datasets their proper owners. In this case, that's you, I guess.
