Hello,

I've been a long time user, long time lurker and don't want to get flamed here. I love Freenas and follow the upgrades carefully. I just want to be sure I'm not alone, or raise a flag, or get some advice.

Lately I've been caught in a pinch though because Samba was rock solid forever and now even with the latest release it's super flaky. I think it started with 9.2.x.x. Windows will show me my UNC names, and even allow me to copy some files, but not others... it usually hangs there for several minutes, sometimes seconds and even drops connections. Zero changes to my environment except the 9.2.1.3 GUI Upgrade. Simple set up, AMD E-240 processor, 8 Gigs of RAM ZFS Raid 5 (3 drives) and one flat backup drive.

I'm not a complainer, love this stuff, but I see a lot of CIFS/Samba issues lately and wanted to point out the 9.2.x releases have made it virtually unusable in recent weeks. Maybe it's just me and I'm open to advice. I must say though, I've been running it since 8.x and have had no issues.

Should I start a fresh install of 9.2.1.3 instead of an upgrade perhaps?

Thanks
Rich.

To be honest.. I'm still on 9.2.0 because CIFS works well with it. The move to Samba4, which came with 9.2.1, was not without some pain. I'm not even considering 9.2.1.3 for my own server. I think 9.2.1.4 might be worth considering(when its released).

I was afraid of that... choices seem to be wait for a stable release or find a way to go back to 9.2.0. You're right, it was rock solid up to that point. I guess my point in posting here was to be sure it was still "on the list" for resolution. I noticed several people having non-descript CIFS/Samba issues lately so it's got to be real. I don't want to post a bug if everyone knows about it already.

Yeah, still major issues (for me) on 9.2.1.3. My NAS is basically not usable for the things I typically use it for, but since the USB stick is buried inside my case, I've not bothered trying to downgrade back to 9.2.0.

I will if they don't get things sorted before I have some time to open the case and extract the USB boot device to reimage to 9.2.0. I really hope they do get things sorted soon...

One of the things that helped me is to add
Code:
change notify = no

to the samba global config, that stopped the deadlocks that occur when browsing folders. Not sure if it will help in your particular situation though...

I tried an x86 upgrade from 9.2.1 to 9.2.1.3 this morning on a test box ... Very poor.. The adapter did indeed disappear and wouldn't reset correctly (from cli).. jails still functioned/plugins functioned but not in the plugins list.. I was gonna set it up clean but SMB was triggering 100% usage Similiar to 9.2.1.2.. I reverted the x86 box to 9.2.1 .. Looks like a 9.2.1.4 is going to have to happen..

Dunno, I got (for first time today) some stuttering watching a movie thru Plex from freeNAS (local LAN, not remote) in 9.2.1.3

But all my CIFs issues were in Windows 8 and 8.1 which have a higher Samba level than Windows 7.

What I would advise is in the settings tab, click on the CIFs services and scroll to the bottom and set Server Maximum Protocol to like 2_10 which is 2.10. See if that resolves your Samba/CIFs issues.

Thanks for the advice. I will wait until 9.2.1.4 (since it's already in the oven) and if I still have problems I try what you have suggested.

For now, I have reverted back to 9.2.0 and it's smooth sailing. No other changes to anything in the environment.

I have a USB stick ready to go for the upgrade and testing though.

I am a FreeNAS believer so I know this will get stomped out with time.

Rich.

Hello my new friends! I decided a few months ago to jump ship from WHS 2011 to FreeNAS. After a couple months of youtube videos, guides, and forums, I finally made the jump last night. It seems as though I may have picked the wrong time. I can't get CIFS to work no matter what I try. I think I am just better off going to 9.2.0 as mentioned a few times. Can someone point me in the right direction to download 9.2.0.

I look forward to starting this new relationship. Honestly, hopefully I don't end up in the forums too often with problems.

Thanks in advance.

Server: AMD Athlon X4, 12GB DDR3 (not ECC, please don't yell at me), a mix of drives 1 to 4TB, and a biostar mobo. Clients are mostly windows 8 with some windows 7 in there.

Hello and thanks for the help.

I am having the same problem with 9.2.0. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong. I've tried installing a dozen times now. My process; I set the root password, create a user with Wheel permissions, make a volume with all my drives (different sizes), create a CIFS share, enable CIFS, change CIFS settings to give guests more rights than nobody, and then CIFS will fail to start. I've tried rebooting and performed my process on both 9.2.0 and 9.2.1.3

It's too late to go back to WHS. Please someone help me to figure out what I am doing wrong or at least point me in the right direction.

hmmm, well after some tinkering I got it to turn on. I changed the CIFS "Guest Account" setting to nobody and it works. Was this a rookie mistake or a bug?

Generally, you set the CIFs guest account to "guest" which you setup for anonymous viewing.

I'm new to this, and have only been playing with a VM, but I was able to use NFS via Windows 7 (it is built in, you just need to turn it on).. You might want to try that as a work around, though be sure to completely disable SAMBA/CIFS because you don't want both systems accessing FREENAS at the same time. Using NFS might be a temp fix until SAMBA is working better..

It's just a thought.

So for a good bunch of us who have a guest user in windows and a guest user in FreeNAS, and set that to no password....huh?

The last I read says we have to change the AD that Windows is using. Most home users don't have Active Directory running.

I could be mistaken, but before 9.2.1 was released there was talk among a couple of us in IRC about that. And Samba4 allows you to run it as the directory manager. One person even asked if there would be a "FreeNAS - Domain Server edition" that was tweaked JUST to be the domain. If all of this is true, then I'd say that most home users COULD be running AD for authentication.

I don't have a machine dedicated to 9.2.1.x so I can't really vouch for this though.

I'm with you on this one. Any tips on how to roll back? I would like to retain my config

The only way I know how to do a roll back assumes you save your config regularly, and always before upgrading.... and not to the server

I suggest you go here http://download.freenas.org/9.2.0/RELEASE/

Download the appropriate version, build the virgin USB stick with FreeNas 9.2.0..... Boot from it, then go to the system page in your browser and upload your backed up config. It'll be like 9.2.1.3 never happened

If you haven't saved your config... tisk tisk (sorry)... but I have no idea how to go backwards with an existing config.

Good Luck.
Rich.
